Living in Huddersfield

Huddersfield is a historical town with a surprising mix of old and new. Mentioned in the Doomsday Book and an early home to Harold Wilson, this town is now home to an exciting, multicultural population and exemplifies the best that British towns have to offer.

Within easy reach of Leeds and Manchester but without the big-city crowds and prices, Huddersfield has plenty to experience. It’s only just slipped out of the top ten for town size in the UK; now holding firm at number 11 with a population of just under 163,000. It has three main shopping areas and showcases the Lawrence Batley Theatre and the John Smith’s stadium.

Higher Education

Huddersfield boasts excellent primary and secondary schools and a growing further education system. There are two sixth form colleges Greenhead and New College and the University of Huddersfield to consider for higher education.

Growing music culture

Since 1978, Huddersfield has hosted the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival. If you want to experience 10 days of music events right on your doorstep, then you can look forward to this festival every autumn. With over 60 events, some of them free, celebrates the best and most diverse voices emerging in music today.

For other cultural events in the area, look out for the Huddersfield Festival of Light, Huddersfield Caribbean Carnival, Huddersfield Literature Festival and the excellent Huddersfield Food and Drink Festival.

Plenty for sports fans

Championship team Huddersfield Town AFC have a football history that any club would be proud of. They were the first team to win three successive league titles; only top teams Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal can boast the same. If you want to support a local team who have the form to make it all the way to the top, you need not look any further than Huddersfield.

If football isn’t your thing, the town has a long association with rugby too. Huddersfield is known as the birthplace of Rugby League. The league was set up to support working people who could not otherwise afford to play.
